Lightbulb Pictual This - You are given $10,000 to build a web site - what would you do next?

Okay,

Pictual This Series #1
I would like to start something different. Let's call this "Pictual This Series #1". In the end, we hope to provide our members with some base knowledge of what to do in certain situations involving money, business, marketing and the web .. it's technologies and where everyone is (and thinks) they are going... at the same time, let's have a little fun and see what others actually think about your ideas based on making money on the internet.

The Scenerio
You are offered $10,000 to take a site like "boo.foo" (imaginary site) and make something happen. You need to design the site, make it work (program the site), promote it and ultimately get something going.

The main goal is to attract new visitors to the website and it must make money to survive in the end. How does it make money? And why do you think it will make money?

The Questions
1. What do you first with the $10,000?
2. How will you budget? (ie: where do you spend/where would you go to spend it?)
3. Will it work and why do you think it will work?

The Rules
Respect thoughts of others, do not flame! This is a learning experience not a "you sux thread because your idea is lame". If an idea is "lame" be bigger and explain why it may not work and give some guidance if you can.

Thats it!

Looking for some great thoughts!

PS - I may participate if this thread has a decent amount of replies. I have some interesting ideas myself but it's pointless if nobody else is willing to participate

Is the $10,000 for personal gain, or for a budget on what to buy for the website?

(Am I allowed to hire designers instead of designing things on my own?) My idea is being done as of now by leagues, but here’s my plan to get it done, at least a small mock up.

Project Idea: Pay to play Online Gaming League

1st Step: Inquire with a coder or two and talk over about functions of the site. (Login system, messaging system, reporting system etc anti cheat program client etc) (About $0-$2k). Design (or buy) a logo and site that is attractive and works with what I want. ($0-$500).

Total income used so far, expensive scenario: $2,500 (one time fee)

2nd Step: Planning, finding a web host for the lowest price also with a domain, if I can get a discounted deal on a yearly subscription rate. Researching what you will be using on your website, and if it is compatible with your servers, via Perl version, apache, etc. ($200-$300 yearly). Once that is done, hire my coders and tell them server specifications
Look around for server boxes, with optimal performance and bandwidth providers. ($200-$300 monthly)

Total Price: $3,100

3rd Step: In amidst of getting the site prepped and ready, do some targeted advertisements across the web ($1-$150), targeting gamers to join the league. Plan to launch a tournament for 500$ for the winning team with a minimum 10$ buy in per team (+$-$500=gain/loss). Contact other businesses/organizations that may be interested, via Intel's gaming division, PNY, ATI, NVIDIA, server companies, etc if they want to incorporate their company into the tournament, talk to them about terms and financial obligations. If possible raise price of entry and prizes given out to winners.

Total Price: $3,750

After this part I figured out its too much of a headache to try and think of it all at once. O.o I wonder if this is what you were looking for as a contest thingy w.e let me know so i can make a proper one.

Picture someone like an Investor having faith in your talent or work, maybe a friend of your dad's or mother.. or close friend. You are provided $10,000 to use your online skills to turn it into $100,000 or more. In the end the business must survive, money must be used properly. The point is what do you do? how do you turn this into more (over time or right away)?

This isn't something you can quickly answer (or maybe it is) however put yourself in a position where you say to yourself "What would I do"?

Do I go with online marketing business? do I start a social networking community? do I research and develop my time, do I outsource for less and gain in the end? do I spend it all upfront and hope for the best? Use your best judgement.

Xplicit, thanks for your response! I'm not looking for anything specifically, nor are you on trial for anything you do with your $10,000 . With business in general, things are very unexpected and change all the time. Perhaps you may look back on this thread (if it stays active for quite some time) and revise/remodify as you need to. Perhaps you have some new ideas, perhaps you feel an existing idea mentioned just won't work.

Pretend you are really given $10K to make a business come to life from nothing to something and it must survive.

It's just fun to see what others would do with the chance of taking $10,000 -- from nothing to something and a plan to back it up. That's all

It's actually a great idea to challenge users with, I'll go back and edit my post later with someting more along the lines.
